Program Description

The Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Program provides individuals with the technical knowledge and skills to install, service, repair, and maintain equipment used in residential heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Program Goals

  • Students will acquire the analytical and critical skills needed to connect core knowledge and skills to discipline-specific information.
  • Students will acquire the ability to think and reason logically, using the language of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Technical Diploma will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the refrigeration cycle including safety procedures and testing requirements for temperature/pressure relationships.
  • Explain the physics of heat and how it applies to the air conditioning and refrigeration field.
  • Diagnose and repair a variety of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of heating and air conditioning and refrigeration controls, including wiring configurations and technical components for optimum performance.

Specific Degree Requirements


Students wishing to earn a Technical Degree in Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration from South Louisiana Community College must:

  • Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.   
  • Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
  • Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
  • Have no more than one-third credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50% credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
  • Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
