Program Mission
The mission of the Associate of Applied Science - Helicopter Aviation program is to provide an effective learning environment that will prepare students for certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot with an Instrument rating and Certificated Flight Instructor with Instrument Rating.
Program Goals
- Prepare students with the technical, non-technical and operational knowledge, skills and attitudes to perform as safe and effective professional aviators in a competitive global aviation industry.
- Emphasize the development of leadership, high order and critical thinking skills, judgement, maturity and resource management in both single pilot and multi-crew environments.
Program Learning Outcomes
Students completing the Associate of Applied Science - Helicopter Aviation will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate competence in written and verbal communication skills, qualitative reasoning and critical thinking.
- Acquire an understanding of the knowledge areas defined in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) and Practical Test Standards (PTS) applicable to the certificate, or rating, sought.
- Acquire and develop skill in specific tasks and flight maneuvers to the standards defined in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) and Practical Test Standards (PTS) applicable to the certificate, or rating, sought.

Specific Degree Requirements
Students wishing to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Helicopter Aviation from South Louisiana Community College must:
- Complete application packet to the program by stated due date - admission to the program is competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Obtain and maintain at least a Second Class FAA Medical Certificate.
- Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.
- Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
- Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
- Used no more than one-third credit in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
- Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
- A selective admission process is used to select candidates for enrollment in the program. Students should note that some courses have prerequisites, which must be completed before enrolling into upper level courses and continuing in the program. The Helicopter Aviation certification process consists of a Knowledge Test and Practical Test required at each level of certification. Practical Tests are administered by an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector or Designated Pilot Examiner. Upon successful completion of the Knowledge and Practical Tests, as well as the General Education Requirements, the graduate is awarded the Associate of Applied Science.

3Choose from Biology (BIOL), Chemistry (CHEM), Geology (GEOL), Physical Science (PHSC), or Physics (PHYS).
