Program Description

The mission of the Aviation Maintenance Technology program is to provide a safe training facility and healthy learning environment that will prepare students for certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance. The Aviation Maintenance Technology certification process consists of three separate tests designed to determine competency in the General, Airframe, and Powerplant sections. In addition, three separate oral and practical tests are administered by an FAA designated examiner. Upon successful completion of the nine tests, the graduate is awarded the FAA Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic Certification.

Program Goals

The Aviation Maintenance Technology program encourages students to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners and establishes a working relationship between students and employers that promotes upgrading of skills for continued advancement in the field of aviation maintenance.  

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Aviation Maintenance Technology program, students will be able to do the following:

  • Pass Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe, Powerplant, or both certifications through written, oral, & practical examination.
  • Demonstrate compentenace in utilization of basic tools in accomplishing federal (FAA) curriculum requirements.
  • Display the ability to interpret and apply maintenance manual requirements to aircraft maintenance tasks.

Program Cycle

Aviation Maintenance Technology is available on the Lafayette Extension Campus.  Visit the SLCC program start calendar to determine the start date for the Aviation Maintenance program.

Specific Degree Requirements


Students wishing to earn an Associates of Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology from South Louisiana Community College must:

  • Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.   ​
  • Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
  • Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
  • Have no more than one-third credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
  • Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
