Health Studies

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Associate of Science in Health Studies degree allows students the opportunity to complete pre-requisites for entrance into selective LPN and RN nursing programs, or to transfer into a Bachelor’s degree program for Health Services Administration, or to enter the workforce in healthcare management. This program is designed for students to acquire knowledge in subjects, with an emphasis on Health Studies. This is accomplished through strengthening skills necessary for problem-solving, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning by creating learning environments suited to individual learning styles. 

PROGRAM GOALS

• To provide foundational knowledge and skills required for acceptance/entrance into selective clinical phases of SoLAcc’s nursing or allied health training.  
• To provide coursework that will allow students to transfer with minimal loss of credit to a baccalaureate degree program in a healthcare field.  
• To provide students with a 60-credit degree that forms a well-rounded healthcare-focused education that will serve both in moving into the workforce and in pursuing further educational endeavors. 
• To provide students the opportunity to develop distinctive career goals and marketable skills for both the ability to complete a four-year degree or enter the workforce directly upon graduation from SoLAcc. 

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of an Associate of Science in Health Studies, students will be able to:

• Critical Thinking - Students will integrate knowledge using critical thinking and experience to produce and explore discipline content across a variety of genres. 
• Quantitative Reasoning - Students will use quantitative reasoning to interpret data and gather statistical information in solving discipline-specific problems. 
• Communication & Expression - Students will communicate clearly to persuade or inform, interpret thoughtfully and logically, and engage actively in dialogue and discussion. Communication and expression may be written or oral, verbal, or nonverbal, informational, or artistic, print or digital, academic or professional. 
• Interpretation - Students will apply critical interpretation and thinking to the subject matter of any discipline, with the ability to identify and understand both theory and practice of that discipline’s content. 

SPECIFIC DEGREE REQUIRMENTS

• Students wishing to earn an Associates of Science, Health Studies Degree from South Louisiana Community College must:
• Have a degree program adjusted SoLacc cumulative average of 2.0.   
• Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SoLAcc courses.
• Have a degree program adjusted SoLAcc cumulative average of 2.0.
• Have no more than 40 percent in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
• Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
