Program Description

The Cosmetology program at SLCC provides the training necessary for students to prepare to take the state board exams.  The program provides training for students in a variety of areas including infection control, anatomy & physiology, hair cutting, coloring, and permanent waving, facials, manicures, and pedicures, as well as the styling of wigs and artificial hair.  Students in this program also participate in a live-work clinic experience by operating the college’s cosmetology salon.  Through live work, students gain experience in scheduling, inventory, and marketing, as well as a full range of salon services.

Program Goals

  • Students will understand basic cosmetology principles and concepts.
  • Students can use the practical knowledge to obtain Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology license to become a professional in the salon and spa industry.

Program Learning Outcomes

All graduates of the Cosmetology program will be able to:

  • Comprehend and apply information relevant to their roles as a Cosmetologist.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role as a Cosmetologist.
  • Demonstrate personal behavior consistent with professional and employer expectations for Cosmetologists.

Specific Degree Requirements


Students wishing to earn a Technical Diploma in Cosmetology from South Louisiana Community College must:

  • Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.   ​
  • Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
  • Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
  • Have no more than one-third credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
  • Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
