Advanced Welding Technology

Program Description

The Advanced Welding Technology certificate allows students to continue their skill development beyond the current Welding Technical Diploma program with an additional 990 contact hours focused primarily on pipe welding techniques. Instruction is provided in various processes and techniques of pipe welding in all positions including shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding. Students will have the opportunity to earn NCCER Level 3 credential. Upon completion of this certificate program, graduates will be prepared for high-level welding positions within the industry. 

Program Goals

  • Students will understand how to properly set-up welding and cutting equipment needed in the field of welding. 
  • Students will acquire the knowledge to properly fit-up pipe coupons and base metal preparations needed for welding operations. 
  • Students will acquire the skills needed to pass industry pipe welding qualification test for employment. 

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Certificate of Tecnical Studies in Advanced Welding Technology will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in safely operating equipment and tools used in the welding industry. 
  • Demonstrate and apply skills necessary to perform quality pipe welds in all positions using the following processes: SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW. 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of weld quality, destructive weld examination, non- destructive weld examination, and various welding codes.  

Specific Degree Requirements


Students wishing to earn an Certificate of Technical Studies Degree in Advanced Welding Technology from South Louisiana Community College must:

  • Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.   ​
  • Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
  • Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
  • Have no more than forty percent of credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
  • Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
