Program Description
The Medical Assistant Program prepares students for employment in private and large group physician’s offices, clinics, hospitals, medical records, laboratories and/or insurance companies. Supervised and/or preceptor based clinical externships are included. Students should note that some courses have prerequisites, which must be completed before enrolling into upper-level courses and continuing in the program. Upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certification exam for Medical Administrative Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Coding Associate, Opportunities for Leadership Advancement.
Program Goals
- To enable students to acquire the educational competencies expected of a certificate of technical studies graduate
- To teach basic theoretical and clinical concepts which will prepare students for entry-level as Medical Assistants (MA)
- To provide students with an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary to function effectively in the workplace
Program Learning Outcomes
Students completing the Technical Diploma in Medical Assistant will:

Comprehend introductory anatomy & physiology principles; MA law and ethics, administrative and clinical procedures, pharmacology, coding & insurance procedures, and professionalism needed for success on the job.

Demonstrate skills training and clinical experiences necessary to secure employment in the health care industry and make immediate and future decisions regarding job choices and educational growth.

Demonstrate skills necessary to become eligible for opportunities leadership and professional advancement in the workplace.

Understand and demonstrate accurate coding for medical case studies and be able to interpret medical terminology into codes.

Specific Degree Requirements
Students wishing to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assistant from South Louisiana Community College must:
- Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.
- Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
- Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
- Have no more than forty percent credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
- Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
General Education Courses - Total Credit Hours: 15
Core Major Courses - Total Credit Hours: 32
Students will complete the Core Major Courses and then Select Either Track 1 or Track 2.
Track 1 - Coding - Total Credit Hours:13
Track 2 - Clinical - Total Credit Hours:13
Semester 3
Select from Courses in Track 1 or Track 2
AAS: Medical Assistant Total Credits: 60
- A “C” or higher is required for all courses in the program.
- Upon completion of HNUR 1314 with a “C” or better and passing of the accompanying industry exam students will receive an Industry Based Credential (IBC) of Nursing Assistant.
- Upon completion of HCOR 1410 and 1411 with a “C” or better and passing of the accompanying industry exam students will receive an Industry Based Credential (IBC) of EKG Technician.
- Upon completion of HCOR 1510 and 1511 with a “C” or better and passing of the accompanying industry exam students will receive an Industry Based Credential (IBC) of Phlebotomy Technician.
- Upon completion of MAST 2310 and 2311 with a “C” or better and passing of the accompanying industry exam students will receive an Industry Based Credential (IBC) of Coding Associate.
- Upon completion of semester 1 and 2 students will receive the CTS: Clinical Medical Assistant.
- Upon completion of semester 1, 2, and 3 students will receive the TD: Medical Assistant with a concentration in either Coding or Clinical.
