Commercial Diving, CTS

Program Description

The Commercial Diving Program provides classroom instruction and practical experience to prepare individuals for entry level employment in the commercial diving industry. The program provides individuals with the knowledge necessary to understand the physics and physiology of hyperbaric environments as well as hands-on experience in areas such as equipment maintenance and equipment operations.

Program Goals

  • To provide students the educational competencies expected of a certificate of technical studies graduate
  • To prepare students for an entry-level career in commercial diving
  • To equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully earn industry-based certifications.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Commercial Diving program will be able to do the following:

  • Understand the physics and physiology of hyperbaric environments.
  • Safely operate and maintain all related surface supplied diving apparatus, support equipment, and life support equipment.
  • Perform actual underwater work similar to that done routinely by divers in offshore oilfield and inland operations.
  • Safely perform cutting and welding in both topside and underwater environments.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing safety/planning techniques using industry standards.

Specific Degree Requirements


Students wishing to earn a Certificate of Technical Studies in Commercial Diving from South Louisiana Community College must:

  • Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.   
  • Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
  • Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
  • Have no more than forty percent credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
  • Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
