PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Technical Diploma in Industrial Marine Electronics Technology provides specialized classroom instruction and practical shop experience to prepare students for employment in a variety of jobs in the field of Industrial Marine Electronics. The program includes instructions in using motors, mechanical diagrams/schematics, radar, fiber optics, laser technology, computer applications, telecommunications, microwave, hydraulics, PLC, video industrial controls, industrial wiring, diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques, and the use of testing equipment.
PROGRAM GOALS
- To provide specialized classroom instruction and practical shop experience to prepare students for employment in a variety of jobs in the field of Industrial Marine Electronics.
- To prepare students to take the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) examination for licensure.
- To prepare students for employment as an entry-level Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technician.
- To educate students on the standards and licensure requirements of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER), Fluid Power Society, Electronics Technician Association, National Electrical Code, and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the Industrial Marine Electronic Technology program, students will be able to:
- Apply Ohm’s Law to analyze basic electronic circuits.
- Perform measurements to basic electronic circuits using a Volt-Ohm meter.
- Perform voltage and time measurements on electronic circuits using an oscilloscope.
- Demonstrate a professional work ethic through coursework and projects.

SPECIFIC DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Students wishing to earn a Technical Degree in Industrial Marine Electronics Technology from South Louisiana Community College must:
- Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.
- Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
- Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
- Used no more than one-third credit in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
- Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS - CREDIT HOURS: 45
CTS: Electronics Technician - Total Credits: 16
CTS: Industrial Marine Electronics and Hydraulics Technician - Total Credits: 16
TD: INDUSTRIAL MARINE ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY TOTAL CREDITS: 45
A grade of “C” or higher is required in all courses.
1 In addition to the core coursework, students interested in the CTS: Two-Way Technician certification will need to complete the following electives: IMEL 2100 (Two-Way Receivers) IMEL 2120 (Two-Way Transmitters), and IMEL 2130 (Two-way Computer Applications). Upon successful completion of the Two-Way Technician certificate, students will be eligible to attempt the FCC Examination for licensure. A grade of “C” or higher is required in all courses.
