Program Description
The Welding program prepares individuals for employment in the field of welding. Instruction is provided in various processes and techniques of welding including oxyfuel cutting, carbon arc cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding, plasma arc cutting, blueprint reading, weld symbols, and joints.
Program Goals
- Students will develop knowledge of safe work practices in the field of welding.
- Students will understand how to properly set up and use oxyfuel cutting and welding equipment.
- Students will produce welds able to meet visual acceptance criteria of power and process piping codes.
- Students will acquire the knowledge of dimensioning, piping symbols and template development.
- Students will understand how to calculate take offs, find angles and use squares and levels for fitting and tacking.
Program Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the Welding Program will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in technical skills and safety principles required for industrial employment.
- Perform quality welds and cuts using SMAW, GMAW, OFC, FCAW, and GTAW.
- Successfully perform welding operations using appropriate processes on various metals and in various situations.
- Interpret blueprints and verbal orders, including welding symbols to fabricate using tools of the
welding trade.

Specific Degree Requirements
Students wishing to earn a Technical Diploma in Welding from South Louisiana Community College must:
- Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.
- Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
- Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
- Have no more than one-third credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
- Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.
