Program Description
This program provides individuals with an opportunity to earn a Commercial/Industrial Electrical Technician diploma in as little as three semesters. Electrical work involves the installation and maintenance of the inside wiring for lighting and distribution systems in residential, industrial, and commercial structures.
Program Goals
- Students will develop knowledge of the safe working practices in the electrical field.
- Students will understand electrical theory.
- Students will read and interpret the National Electric Code.
- Students will read and interpret electrical prints.
- Students will be able to install and troubleshoot various electrical circuits.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates completing the Technical Diploma in Electrician will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to work with others in the electrical field.
- Display an understanding of electrical theory by designing and troubleshooting various electrical circuits.
- Demonstrate safe electrical work practices for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Analyze electrical prints and display an understanding of the National Electrical Code® by laying out an electrical service and installing various electrical circuits for given applications.

Specific Degree Requirements
Students wishing to earn a Technical Degree in Electrician from South Louisiana Community College must:
- Have a degree program adjusted SLCC cumulative average of 2.0.
- Have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through SLCC courses.
- Have earned at least a “C” in each course unless stated by a specific program.
- Have no more than one-third credit hours in required major courses and no more than 50 percent of credit hours total from non-traditional sources, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), to meet the degree requirements, unless required by a specific program.
- Have completed at least the number of credits stipulated in the degree program.

A grade of “C” or higher is required in all courses.
